The natural park starts roughly 30 to 40 minutes by road from the city. San José, the main base, is at the lower end of that range; check each tour’s meeting point.
Not freely. From June to September car access to the beaches between Los Genoveses and Cala Carbón is restricted, with a paid car park and a shuttle from San José. Check the current rules before you go.

Yes, the city has its own, such as San Miguel and Zapillo, within reach of the centre. The famous coves and volcanic bays are in the Cabo de Gata park, not in the city.
Not in our listings. Granada is roughly 160 km away, a drive of about one and a half to two hours, and has its own page on a sister site.
In many Almería bars a drink comes with a tapa, and you often choose it. Choice and portion size vary from bar to bar, so treat it as a local custom, not a guaranteed meal.
