Alcazaba and Cathedral: Almería City in One Day
Updated October 20, 2026 · 4 min read
Almería city is overshadowed by its coast, and that works in your favour: the main sights are close together and rarely crowded. A day is enough for the three that matter.
The Alcazaba
The listing for the guided Alcazaba tour calls it the largest Muslim-style monument in Andalusia. The tour costs €28 per person, lasts about 2 hours, and has 29 reviews at a perfect 5.0. That is a small number of reviews, so read the booking page for the language and group size.
Whether you need the guide is a fair question. In 2024 the regional government proposed charging €5 for the Alcazaba and the Archaeological Museum, then said it would not charge “for the moment”. We cannot say what applies on your date, so check the current price and the hours with the site. Published hours vary by season, are shorter on Sundays, and have the monument closed on Mondays, which matters if you plan around a weekend.
The Cathedral
The cathedral looks more like a fort than a church. It was built in the 16th century after an earthquake, with thick walls, towers and battlements that protected it from pirate raids. Two tickets are listed:
- Cathedral entry, €8, about 45 minutes, 68 reviews at 4.3.
- Cathedral and Convent of the Puras, €12, a skip-the-line combination ticket with an audio guide, 48 reviews at 4.5.
If you have the time, the combined ticket is the better deal on paper for €4 more. The cathedral also holds services, so ask the booking page what that means for visiting times.
The Civil War shelters
The Spanish Civil War shelters are the offer with the most reviews of the three: €18, 1.5 hours, 160 reviews at 4.5. The listing describes a guided walk through 1 kilometre of underground galleries along the Paseo de Almería. It is the sight that sets Almería apart from other Andalusian cities, so it earns a place if you like history that is not about palaces.
A day that works
- Start at the Alcazaba, before it gets hot.
- Walk down into the old town for the cathedral.
- Book the shelters for the afternoon, when you want to be out of the sun.
Keep the first visit flexible: opening hours and tour times are the things that most often change, and the booking pages show them for your date.
Worth knowing
Almería’s centre is walkable, though the Alcazaba is on a hill, so the way up is steep. Do not plan this day for a Monday without checking. The city tours and tickets page lists ten offers from €6, and for a day outside the city, Cabo de Gata’s beaches are the usual next step.
