Kayaking and Snorkelling in Cabo de Gata: Which Tour, and What to Expect
Updated October 20, 2026 · 5 min read
Cabo de Gata-Níjar is a volcanic coast: dark cliffs, small coves and clear water over rock. It became a natural park in 1987 and a UNESCO biosphere reserve in 1997, and the park includes a marine strip of about 120 km². It is a protected coast, which is one more argument for going with a guide who knows it, and the water is clear enough to be worth looking into.
The two big kayak tours
GetYourGuide lists two kayak and snorkel tours that dominate the park’s reviews. Both cost €45 per person and both last 3 hours:
- The hidden-cove kayak and snorkel tour: 661 reviews, 4.8 stars. The listing says it includes a guide, professional photos and all equipment, and finishes with a cold drink by the sea. It also describes itself as suitable for all levels.
- The kayaking and snorkel excursion through the natural park: 645 reviews, 4.7 stars. Its summary talks about learning the flora and fauna of the area and does not list inclusions in the same way.
They look like two versions of the same product, and from the summaries you cannot tell them apart. The honest advice is to compare the departure point and the time on the booking page, because those decide your day more than half a star does. If photos and the drink matter to you, the first one states them.
If you do not want to paddle: snorkel only
The guided snorkelling tour is €30 for 2 hours, with 112 reviews at 4.6 stars. Its description is aimed at families and curious children, and calls itself educational. That is a different pitch from the kayak tours, which are physical. If anyone in your group is uneasy in a kayak for three hours, this is the one to look at, and you save €15 per person.
None of the summaries gives a minimum age, a swimming requirement or a weight limit. Do not assume them either way. Read the participation terms on the booking page before you pay, especially with children.
The summer rules you should know about
In summer the park limits access by road to the beaches west of San José. It runs roughly from mid or late June to late September; the exact dates are set again each year. The same regulation also caps groups of unpowered craft such as kayaks at five without authorisation from the regional delegation. Ask the operator how it handles groups larger than that.
What to expect in the water
You can expect clear water, rocky shore and fish. The park’s volcanic rock makes for dramatic cliffs and small coves, and a snorkel stop in one of them is the high point of the tour. What you cannot expect is guaranteed calm. Wind and swell decide whether a tour runs and where it goes, and the summaries do not say how a cancellation is handled. The cancellation terms are on the booking page. Check them before you pick a date near the end of your stay.
Which one
For most people: the hidden-cove tour. It has the most reviews, the higher rating, and it states what is included. If you would rather not paddle, the snorkel tour. If you are choosing by the sea and not by the activity, boat trips in Cabo de Gata show the same coast without the effort. All 17 boat and kayak offers, from €9, are on the boat trips and kayaking in Almería page, and the Cabo de Gata tours page has 22 offers from €10.
