Caves of Sorbas: Is the Guided Tour Worth It?
Updated October 20, 2026 · 4 min read
Most of Almería’s famous scenery is sunlit: desert, volcanic coves, beaches. The Caves of Sorbas are the opposite, gypsum caves underground, and they make a good change from a hot day outdoors.
Why you need a guide
The caves sit inside a protected karst area, the Karst en Yesos de Sorbas. Published information says that you can only enter with a guide or with permission from the regional environment authority, so there is no turning up and wandering in. The caves are also visited in their natural state, unlit and without built walkways, which is a large part of the appeal and the reason to dress for it.
The tour on GetYourGuide
The Caves of Sorbas tour costs €25.30 per person, lasts about 2 hours, and has 99 reviews at 4.9 stars, which makes it a bestseller. The listing promises gypsum crystals that reflect the light, and names the Yeso Cave and the Barranco del Infierno Cave among the stops.
The listing does not say what the group size is, whether helmets and torches are provided, or what the minimum age is. Those are the three things worth reading on the booking page before you pay.
Longer routes exist
Besides the basic route of about two hours, there are, as far as we know, longer and more demanding routes, up to a technical route of several hours. We could not verify durations, difficulty, prices or opening hours, so have the caves confirm them directly. The €25.30 tour matches the length of the basic route. If you want the technical route, you would probably book it with the caves directly, not through this listing.
What to bring
- Shoes with grip and clothes you do not mind getting dirty.
- A layer. We have no temperature figure for the caves, so ask the booking page.
- A phone with the torch off: the guide’s light shows what you are there to see.
Getting there
Sorbas is inland, north-east of Almería city, and the listing does not tell us whether transport from the city is included. Check the meeting point on the booking page. If you are driving yourself, comparing rental cars for Almería before you arrive is worth doing, since we cannot confirm a convenient public bus.
Who it is for
Worth it if you want something different from sun and sea, or a cool, dry hour away from a hot day. Less so if you dislike tight spaces: say so when you book and ask how the route is. If the weather is good and you only have a day, the Tabernas Desert options or Cabo de Gata beaches will usually be the stronger pick. All eight Tabernas Desert tours and the wider things to do in Almería are listed in the categories.
