Do You Need a Car in Almería?
Updated October 21, 2026 · 5 min read
The short answer: no for Almería city, yes for a holiday built around the province. The old centre, cathedral, Civil War shelters and seafront work on foot. A car starts earning its place when you want several independent days in Cabo de Gata, Tabernas and Mojácar. For a weekend in the city, use the airport bus and book one organised excursion. For a week split between coves and inland villages, hire a car for the days outside Almería rather than automatically for the whole stay.
What works without a car
Central Almería is compact. Driving between the Alcazaba, cathedral and shelters merely exchanges a walk for parking and a climb; the Alcazaba still sits above street level. A couple staying near the centre can walk, use a taxi when necessary and avoid collecting a vehicle altogether.
The airport does not force the decision either. Aena says urban bus line 30 connects the airport, Almería and Retamar every day of the year, with an estimated 35-minute journey to the city. Check the current timetable for your flight rather than relying on an old departure list.
An organised trip also solves specific days well. The leading Tabernas 4x4 experience leaves from Almería, so nobody in your group has to navigate or drive back tired. Boat and kayak activities at Cabo de Gata depend on their stated meeting points; read that field before assuming a city pick-up.
When the car becomes useful
Cabo de Gata is not one attraction with one entrance. San José, Mónsul, Los Genoveses, Rodalquilar, Las Negras, Agua Amarga and Carboneras are spread along the park. Public transport may serve towns, but it does not reproduce a day of changing plans between a viewpoint, a beach and an inland stop. A car is valuable for that flexibility.
The same applies if you combine Tabernas and Mojácar on separate days, stay in rural accommodation, carry beach equipment or need to return during a child’s nap. Families should reserve the exact infant carrier, child seat or booster seat required and obtain confirmation from the supplier; a generic “child seat” label is not enough.
Three travellers, three answers
- City-break couple: no car unless one particular day needs it.
- Family based on the coast: often yes, especially with equipment and several beaches, but confirmed parking matters.
- Visitor without a driving licence: stay centrally and combine the airport bus, taxis and selected tours; Almería is still workable.
A low headline rate is not the full calculation. Add parking at the accommodation, fuel, deposit, excess, CDW terms, additional driver and child equipment before comparing the car with transfers and tours.
Our recommendation
Do not hire a car for an Almería-only break. For four or more days with two or three self-guided outings, it becomes the practical choice. Book accommodation with confirmed parking first, then hire only for the part of the trip that benefits from it. That keeps the city days simple without surrendering the freedom that makes Cabo de Gata rewarding.
