Mojácar and Playa de los Muertos: How to See Both

Updated October 20, 2026 · 4 min read

A pebbly cove at the foot of a tall cliff, with clear water and few people

Mojácar and Playa de los Muertos lie on the north-east coast of the province, further from Almería city than most people expect. They are best treated as one day out, not as an add-on.

Playa de los Muertos

The beach lies at the foot of a cliff and can only be reached on foot. Published guides describe three paths of different difficulty, the first about 700 metres and fairly steep. By car it is roughly an hour from the city of Almería, and much closer if you are staying in Carboneras. Beyond it, to the south, a cliff rises to the Mesa Roldán, where an 18th-century watchtower stands.

Nothing we found says whether there is shade or any facilities, so take water and a hat.

Mojácar

The village is described as Moorish in style, with narrow streets and white houses. The one offer based in the village itself is a Casa de la Canana Museum tour, €3.50 per person, 18 reviews at 4.6. It is a museum in a well-preserved house from the early 20th century, so think of it as a short stop.

The guided tour

The tour from Mojácar and Vera costs €45 per person, lasts about 5 hours, and has 28 reviews at a perfect 5.0. The listing says you spend time on Playa de los Muertos, see the Mesa de Roldán tower and the 1863 lighthouse, and visit Carboneras, an old fishing village, with an optional lunch that costs extra. It starts at Mojácar or Vera, not in Almería city, so check the meeting point.

Other ways in

  • Day trip from Almería: Cabo de Gata Natural Park and Mojácar together, €70, about 9 hours, 13 reviews at 4.6. A long day, with few reviews.
  • Boat cruise from Garrucha: a guided cruise with Mojácar, Garrucha and Vera, €70, about 2 hours, 16 reviews at a perfect 5.0.

By car

We cannot confirm a convenient public bus for this stretch, so a car gives you the most freedom. Comparing rental cars for Almería is worth doing before you arrive. Take the beach path into account: it is a walk, with a climb on the way back.

Which one

If you are staying in Mojácar or Vera, take the guided tour. If you are in Almería, decide first whether you want one long day here or a day in Cabo de Gata, where the best beaches are more spread out and closer. The wider Cabo de Gata tours page has 22 offers, from €10.
